A crack in a window pane. A chip in a glass tabletop. A fogged insulated window unit. A scratched shower door. Each of these glass damage scenarios triggers the same question: repair or replace? The answer depends on the type of glass, the nature of the damage, the safety implications, and the economics of each option. Here is the framework that glass professionals use.
The First Question: Is the Glass Tempered?
The answer to this single question determines everything else. Tempered glass cannot be repaired — not meaningfully, not safely. The reason is fundamental to the physics of tempering: the glass’s strength comes from the pre-stressed state (exterior in compression, interior in tension). Any penetration of the surface — whether by a crack, chip, or drill — disrupts the stress field and either initiates spontaneous breakage or creates a weakness that will eventually fail unpredictably.
If your shower door, glass railing, or tempered glass door is cracked or chipped, the correct answer is always replacement. There is no safe crack repair for tempered glass. Products marketed as “glass repair kits” for automotive windshields use resin injection into the crack — a technique that works for laminated windshield glass (which is not tempered) but is inappropriate for any architectural tempered glass application.
How do you know if glass is tempered? Look for the acid-etched safety mark in a corner of the panel — required by code for all tempered glazing in the US (CPSC 16 CFR 1201). If present, the glass is tempered. If absent but the glass is in a shower, railing, door, or other hazardous location, assume it is tempered and consult a professional before any repair attempt.
Annealed Glass: What Can and Cannot Be Repaired
Annealed (non-tempered) glass — found in most window panes, picture frame glass, and older residential windows — can be repaired in some circumstances:
Scratch repair: Surface scratches in annealed glass can be polished out using cerium oxide compound and a felt polishing wheel, in a process similar to polishing scratches from car paint. Cerium oxide (CeO₂) is a mild abrasive that preferentially removes the thin damaged surface layer without appreciably changing the glass thickness. This process is effective for shallow scratches (≤0.1mm depth) but will not address deep scratches or chips. Important caveat: if the glass is coated (low-E coating, mirror backing, etc.), polishing will remove the coating in the polished area, creating a visible difference in reflectance or thermal performance.
Chip repair (minor): Very small chips at glass edges can sometimes be ground and polished smooth to eliminate the sharp edge hazard, though the chip will remain visible. Edge grinding requires professional equipment.
Crack repair: Long cracks in annealed glass are generally not repairable to structural adequacy. Crack injection resins can stabilize a crack cosmetically, but the structural capacity of the glass panel is permanently reduced at the crack location. For safety-critical applications, replacement is the correct choice.
The Fogged Insulated Glass Unit: Almost Always Replacement
The white or grey haze that appears between the panes of double or triple-pane insulated glass units (IGUs) is moisture condensation inside the sealed airspace — evidence that the edge seal has failed. IGU seals are made of polyisobutylene (PIB) primary sealant and a silicone or polysulfide secondary sealant; they have a design life of 15–20 years but can fail earlier from UV degradation, thermal cycling stress, or building movement.
Once a seal fails, moisture enters the space and the desiccant (typically molecular sieve material embedded in the aluminum spacer) becomes saturated. There is no way to re-dry the interior airspace without disassembling and rebuilding the IGU — which costs nearly as much as a new unit. Most professionals recommend replacing the IGU (the glass unit only, not the frame if it is in good condition) rather than any attempted repair.
The Economics: When Does Replacement Make More Sense Than Repair?
For residential window glass: a standard single-pane annealed glass replacement (cut-to-size, installed) typically costs $75–$200 for a normal window size. An IGU replacement for a standard double-hung window: $150–$400. A tempered glass shower door panel replacement: $300–$800 depending on size and glass type. In most cases, the economics of glass repair only favor that option when the glass panel itself is expensive to fabricate (very large, specialty glass, or beveled/patterned) and the damage is limited to a surface scratch rather than a structural crack or break.
