One of the most common misconceptions homeowners have about shower door installation is that measurement is simple — just get the width and height, right? In reality, professional measurement for a frameless shower enclosure involves 12–20 individual measurements, assessment of wall plumb and floor level, and calculations to ensure the glass panels will fit an opening that is almost never perfectly square or straight. Here is what actually goes into it.
Why Bathrooms Are Almost Never Square
In a typical residential bathroom construction, the tile installer works to the floor and wall surfaces — not to any absolute geometric standard. Tile has thickness variation (±1/16 inch is normal), thinset mortar bed thickness varies (1/4 to 1/2 inch), and walls are furred, floated, and tiled over framing that was never perfectly plumb to begin with. By the time the tile is done, it is common for a 36-inch wide alcove shower opening to vary by 1/4 to 1/2 inch in width from top to bottom, and for the wall to be out of plumb by a similar amount.
For a framed shower door with a metal track, this does not matter much — the track accommodates variation and the thin glass can flex slightly. For a frameless door with 1/2-inch tempered glass that cannot be bent or trimmed, every measurement must account for every millimeter of variation.
The Professional Measurement Protocol
Step 1: Check for plumb. Using a 48-inch level or a digital level (accurate to 0.1°), check both walls of the opening at three heights: 6 inches from the floor, at mid-height, and 6 inches from the ceiling. Record each reading. If a wall is more than 1/4 inch out of plumb over the door height, the glass panel will need to be cut with a slight taper (a “raked” cut) to maintain a consistent gap between the glass edge and the wall.
Step 2: Check the floor for level. The bottom of the door panel must clear the floor (or threshold) consistently across its full width, without touching. A floor that drops 3/8 inch from one side to the other will cause the door to bind if not accounted for in the bottom seal design.
Step 3: Measure the opening width at three heights. Top, middle, and bottom. Record all three. The minimum measurement determines the maximum glass panel width; the design must account for the narrowest point.
Step 4: Measure the opening height at three points. Left, center, and right. Again, minimum governs.
Step 5: Check the header (if applicable). If a fixed panel or header bar will cross the top of the opening, the horizontal distance must be measured with a level string or laser level — not a tape measure along the ceiling, which will follow any sag or crown in the ceiling.
Step 6: Identify hinge wall substrate. Is the hinge wall framed wood studs, CMU block, or steel stud? The hardware anchor type changes depending on the substrate. A 3/8-inch glass door weighs approximately 28–32 lbs; with a pull force of 200 lbs per code, the hinge anchor must develop significant shear and tensile capacity from the wall framing.
The Tolerance Stack-Up Problem
Manufacturing tolerances for tempered glass (per ASTM C1048) allow ±1/16 inch on cut dimensions. Hardware mounting holes are drilled to ±1/32 inch. Hinges have 1/8 inch of adjustment range. The sum of all these tolerances — the tolerance stack-up — means that a frameless door system must be designed with adequate adjustment range to accommodate the worst-case combination of manufacturing and installation variation.
This is why experienced installers never order glass until they have templated the actual opening and resolved all plumb and level issues. When Things Go Wrong: The Cost of a Bad Measurement
A tempered glass panel that arrives 1/4 inch too wide cannot be trimmed. It must be reordered — adding 1–2 weeks to the project and the full cost of the replacement panel (typically $200–$600 depending on size). A panel ordered to the wrong height may not cover the opening properly or may bind on the threshold. These errors are not rare in DIY shower door installation, which is why professional templating is worth every penny of the labor cost.
